With over years of experience in feeding technology, Coperion K-Tron development and engineering teams are experts at creating smart feeding solutions. Our customers are a diverse group of global industries. They range from producers of bulk and fine chemicals, to petrochemicals, food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, polymers and plastics, pulp and paper, paints and pigments, soaps and detergents, fertilizers and agricultural chemicals.

While these industrial segments differ vastly, they all use feeders to control the flow of bulk material that is to be converted into finished products. Process equipment manufacturers have developed a vast body of expertise and a wide range of feeding technology options to address the multitude of challenges that can arise for process operations involving bulk solids.

Your feeder selection—and the success of your application—will be greatly influenced by the specific characteristics of the materials you must feed, the recipe precision needed for your process and the throughput required. The flow behavior of different bulk solids can vary greatly depending on the material properties or particle geometry.

No single feeder design or feeder size can handle all the different material characteristics or throughput requirements. The following short list describes the behaviors most commonly encountered and the feeding solutions that feeder equipment manufacturers such as Coperion K-Tron have developed to handle these bulk solids challenges. Easy-flowing materialssuch as plastic pellets, granules and flakes, are most frequently metered with a single screw feeder.

A variety of screw sizes and geometries are available to accommodate different material characteristics and desired feedrates. Bulk Solids Pump BSP feeders and vibratory feeders also provide gentle, precise feeding of free-flowing materials. BSP feeders employ a patented positive displacement action that feeds free flowing material with exceptional accuracy. Floodable materialsincluding fine materials such as fumed silica, gypsum and diatomaceous earth, can behave like liquids if not properly controlled during hopper discharge and feeding.

Here a feeder with interlocking twin screws is often the best choice. The intermeshing screw flights act as a valve to control material flow. Difficult-flowing materialssuch as fiberglass and rubber particles, often require special feeder designs and other flow-aid devices to enable better control of discharge during feeding.

There are many different metering options, with screw feeders and vibratory feeders being the most frequent choices. Cohesive materialssuch as titanium dioxide, pigments, APIs and copper concentrates, create additional challenges during process operations, and are particularly susceptible to bridging inside hoppers and cake or accrete to the equipment surfaces.

Fragile and friable materialssuch as many food products and fibers must be handled carefully. Weigh belt feedersvibratory feeders and loss-in-weight belt feeders are designed for gentle feeding of these products.

Single screw feeders are also an option when configured correctly. The automation of plastics processes such as plastics extrusion, compounding and resin manufacturing can be done with bulk material handling equipment and controls.

This application profile section provides an in depth look at various plastics processing applications, materials fed in these applications, and components incorporated into a system.

Technology plays a key role in the global manufacture of high-quality compounds. Today, ambitious recycling companies worldwide are using technology where such compounds are made from recycled plastics. They are motivated by companies that can provide a uniformly high quality of the finished product and high achievable throughput rates. It is important there is a smooth interaction of all process steps from material handling to feeding, twin screw extrusion, pellet treatment cooling, drying, homogenization and finished product handling.

Recycled Plastics. Recycling plays a key role in achieving this goal. Many plastics processing operations are facing the question of how to implement recycling on an industrial scale at the highest quality. Polyolefin Production Polyolefins are produced by the polymerization of olefins or alkenes molecules with the general formula CnH2n such as ethylene, propylene, butene, isoprene, pentene, etc.

Polyethylene and polypropylene are two of the top polymer resins used in the world today. These resins can be tailored to achieve wide range of mechanical and chemical properties, making it possible to use them in a myriad of applications such as agricultural films, garments, tapes, stretch films, retail bags, bottles, containers, pipes, etc.

In turn, the polyolefin grade is determined by key properties such as molecular weight, molecular weight distribution MWDcrystallinity, branching and density that affect how and where each resin is used. PVC is used in the manufacture of end-use products for a wide range of applications in the consumer, construction, food and medical industries.

Products made with PVC exhibit good impact strength, stiffness and strength-to-weight ratio. PVC products offer good dimensional stability at ambient temperatures, resistance to chemicals and oils, durability, and non-flammability character.

This reaction is carried out in an autoclave where the raw materials VCM, emulsifiers and chemical initiators are dispersed in demineralized water under vigorous agitation. Wood-Plastic Composites Wood-plastic composites may be one of the most dynamic sectors of today's plastic industry.

Although the technology is not new, there is growing interest in the new design possibilities this mariage of materials offers.

Products for Plastics

The production of Wood-Plastic Composites typically uses a fine wood waste cellulose based fiber fillers such as hardwood, softwood, plywood, peanut hulls, bamboo, straw, etc. The powder is extruded to a doughlike consistency and then extruded to the desired shape. Additives such as colorants, coupling agents, stabilizers, blowing agents, reinforcing agents, foaming agents, and lubricants help tailor the plastic end product to the target area of application.

Long Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastics are a recent development in newer technologies where PP or thermoplastic material is directly compounded with long glass fibers rovings and then molded in tne operation. Long Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastics LFT have excellent mechanical properties and stiffness-to-weight ratio which is of great interest to the automotive industry. These in-line compounding processes for long fiber material offer users more flexibility, as they are able to both compound and process such materials in accordance with their own formulation and also use ready made compounds.

Calcium Carbonate in Plastics Compounding Calcium carbonate CaCO3 is one of the most popular mineral fillers used in the plastics industry. It is widely available around the world, easy to grind or reduce to a specific particle size, compatible with a wide range of polymer resins and economical.

As an additive in plastic compounds, CaCO3 helps decrease surface energy and provides opacity and surface gloss, which improves surface finish. In addition, when the particle size is carefully controlled, CaCO3 helps increase both impact strength and flexural modulus stiffness. Calcium carbonate may be used with a myriad of thermoplastic resins. Polypropylene compounds are often filled with calcium carbonate to increase rigidity, an important requirement for operations at high temperatures.

In PVC, calcium carbonate is used with flexible compounds such as tubing, wire and cable insulation, latex gloves, trash bags and in rigid compounds such as extruded pipes, conduits and window profiles. BOPP Film Production Growth in commodity and specialty biaxially-oriented films for the packaging industry has been steadily growing, with applications requiring simultaneous feeding of a large variety of additives directly into the extruder.

Animal process flow.A circular economy must not only be sustainable and environmentally friendly, but also profitable for the companies that manufacture, process, and recycle plastics.

To this end, the purity of the raw materials and sorting streams plays a decisive role. Using intelligent technologies and services, we help businesses in the plastics sector operate with circularity and efficiency.

Plastics processing technology

In this way, profitability, sustainability, and environmental protection go hand in hand. Our metal detectors and magnet separation systems for the plastics, rubber and chemical industries reliably identify pieces of metal and metal inclusions — regardless of the material — and automatically remove them.

In doing so, plastics metal separation systems play an important role in protecting machinery and blow moulding tools, boosting production reliability, reducing downtimeand ensuring high-quality products. Metal detectors and magnetic separation systems help address two of the Six Big Losses of manufacturing productivity : unplanned stops and production rejects.

Machine ry protection: The plastics, rubber and chemical industries often use expensive equipment, such as injection-moulding machines, calender rolls, extruders and blow-moulding machines.

We have standardized solutions for all process steps:. How easy is it to install the metal detector in the production line — and how easy is it for your staff to operate the device?

In our white paper, we provide a detailed outline of the issues, their causes and the necessary countermeasures for eliminating metal contamination in the plastics processing industry. The Whitepaper explores the challenges that metal contamination poses to compounding and masterbatch production and considers the key features that metal separators must have to provide an adequate solution.

Separately purchased recyclate often contains various different polymers as well as metal contaminants such as aluminum, brass, and stainless steel. Learn in our Case Study how Sitraplas has solved this problem. Unplanned downtime is a nightmare for every company, but especially for continuous production facilities. When metal separators are networked with plastic processing machines, the flow of information between machines can be monitored.

This was to protect the extruder screw from damage and avoid expensive production stops. Looking for more information or advice? Contact us. This type of "non-training" training takes a huge toll on a company's productivity and profits. Books - There are many excellent books on virtually every aspect of injection molding, extrusion, processing behavior of plastics materials, troubleshooting The downside of books is that few people on the production floor will read them and the retention of knowledge is low.

And it is just knowledge, not skills. Best used as reference material. Seminars - There are many seminars available to plastics processors. A quick Google search will show you many companies that put them on. At Paulson, we have the Paulson Plastics Academy that gives several seminars around the country on injection molding.

These are both technical seminars as well as seminars for managers to understand the economics of molding. We address the skills portion of training with both live machine demonstrations and using SimTech, our injection molding machine simulator.

Some of the advantages are available in the plant to all employees, everyone gets the same training, employees actually enjoy it because it allows them to learn at their pace, it is customizable, the information is always current, all record keeping is handled automatically and it allows a company to "grow their own" molding experts.

Feeding & Blending

The plastics industry's skilled labor shortage can become a non-issue. Simulators - The most popular ones are injection molding machine simulators. Just like the airlines use simulators to keep their pilots current, injection molders can avoid wasting expensive machine time and train on an injection molding machine simulator.

Paulson's simulator, called SimTech, allows trainee's to run a wide variety of simulations and see immediate results.

For example, temperature changes will be reflected instantly instead of having to wait several minutes. So a lot of hands-on training can be packed into a shorter amount of time than at a seminar, for example. Blended Learning - Any or all of the above can be combined to construct your own specialized training program. By combining several different training options, employees will get a variety of learning opportunities.

Employees will tend towards the method they like best and that is perfectly fine. This "blended" learning model is best constructed with the assistance of an experienced trainer. When you combine training from several different sources, you need to make sure the information doesn't conflict and the integration of training components is as seamless as possible. We don't have this book yet.
